Welcome to this week’s edition of Friday Thoughts, where I share what’s been on my mind this week. Enjoy!

Memorial Day Hours
GAIN will be closed for regular sessions on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25.
Like the past few years, a few of us will be getting together that morning to do “Murph” or “Kendra.” If you’d like to join us, just let me know.
Training Ramblings
I’ve had a good week of training. My goal was to shake it up and do some things I hadn’t done in a while. I tested some heavy lifts and did some hard-breathing conditioning workouts. My shoulders are toast from push jerks on Wednesday and I was happy with both my leg strength and how good it felt to squat some heavier weights - it had been a while.
Balance?
This is some impressive skill. Might add it to our list of balance exercises.
Is anyone Surprised?
The beauty of what we do at GAIN — and at a lot of other small strength and conditioning gyms — is that it’s local, personal, and unique. Call them micro gyms, warehouse gyms, training studios, whatever. The common thread is real coaching, real relationships, and an actual community.
Trying to franchise that small, local vibe at scale just isn’t the same.
This stuff can’t be packaged by private equity or recreated with a formula some place far from a gym.
the kids call this
Ego lifting.
I cannot believe this kid’s parents put this online. I’ve watched a lot of Rory’s videos since she was 9 (4 years ago). I’m all about kids hitting the weights and even competing in weightlifting. I do not think it stunts growth - just to get that out of the way. But this is just ugly moving and I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, elite kids are not impressive. Who cares.
